Most Indian Head pennies are worth $1–$3 — and one date is worth more than a thousand circulated common dates combined. The 1877 is the undisputed key to the series (1859–1909), with the 1909-S and 1908-S close behind. This guide covers the key dates, the semi-keys worth pulling from a bulk lot, and how condition moves the numbers.
The Key Dates
| Date | Mintage | Why It Matters | Typical Circulated Range |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1877 | 852,500 | The key — lowest business-strike mintage of the bronze era | About $800–$1,500+ (Good to Fine) |
| 1909-S | 309,815 | Final year, only S-mint issue collectors chase hard | About $300–$600 |
| 1908-S | 1,115,000 | First S-mint Indian cent | About $60–$110 |
| 1872 | 4,042,000 | Semi-key; strong demand in all grades | About $80–$150 |
| 1870 / 1871 | ~5.3M / 3.9M | Semi-keys | About $40–$90 |
| 1864-L | — | “L” on ribbon variety, bronze transition year | About $60–$120 |
| Common dates (1880s–1900s) | 10M+ | Bulk of the series | About $1–$3 |
Ranges are typical 2026 price-guide levels for problem-free coins; cleaned or damaged examples sell for a fraction. Uncirculated red examples of any date are a different market entirely — original mint color is everything on copper.
Two Metals, One Series
The first Indian cents (1859–1864) were struck in a thick copper-nickel alloy — the pale “white cents.” In 1864 the Mint switched to thin bronze planchets, and the designer’s initial “L” (for James B. Longacre) appeared on the ribbon that year. The copper-nickel years trade a bit stronger than bronze commons date-for-date, and the 1864-L bridges both.
How to Check a Bulk Lot
Sort by decade first, then pull every 1870s date, every S-mint (1908-S, 1909-S), and 1864s to check for the L. On the obverse, wear hits the feather tips and hair curl; on the reverse, the wreath and shield. A coin with full feather detail and a bold date grades Fine or better and multiplies most of the ranges above. For the generation after this series, see our coin rolls guide for roll-hunting basics, and the glossary for grading terms.

FAQ
What is the rarest Indian Head penny?
The 1877, with 852,500 struck and heavy attrition in circulation. In mint state it is a five-figure coin; even in Good condition it lists around $800+.
Are Indian Head pennies made of copper?
From 1864 on, yes — 95% copper bronze. The 1859–1864 issues are copper-nickel, which is why they look pale and feel thicker.
How much is an 1888 Indian Head penny worth?
It is a common date: about $1–$3 circulated, more in uncirculated condition with original red color. The value in any Indian cent comes from date rarity and condition, in that order.
What should I look for in a roll of Indian Head cents?
Pull the 1870–1872 dates, both S-mints, and check every 1864 for the L on the ribbon. Everything else is common-date material worth a small multiple of face in bulk.
