The change was not a subtle adjustment. The Coinage Act of 1965 moved circulating dimes and quarters away from silver as the United States responded to a coin shortage and rising demand for silver. The Mint continued striking coins dated 1964 after the calendar year ended, while 1965-dated clad quarters were produced later. Do not confuse face value, melt value and collector value. The coin says twenty-five cents, but its silver content creates a metal-value floor. What about a 1965 quarter with a silver-looking edge?
Do not assume it is a valuable transitional error. First rule out plating, environmental discoloration, a filed edge, an inaccurate scale or an altered date. Genuine wrong-planchet and off-metal errors require specialist authentication because the value claim depends on what the coin actually is, not what one photograph appears to show.
Preserve an unusual coin exactly as found. Do not clean, scratch, file, drill or acid-test it. Photograph both sides and the full edge, record its weight with a calibrated scale and submit it to a qualified dealer or recognized grading service when the evidence justifies the cost.
